FAQ: Where are the best spots for my photos?

A question I get asked a lot is “Do you know any good spots for pictures?” or “Where do you think I should get them done?”

Once a client books me for their session, they’re not really sure where they should have their photos done. I understand completely because well, most people don’t really think of that as they drive by a field of wild flowers, or pass their neighbors barn. Once they get their photos done, they’re totally stumped.

Because this is a question I get asked a lot, I figured I’d write a post on how to find your perfect location to capture your memories!

1.) Think of a location that means something to you.

I tell this to a lot of my clients (especially my brides) is to think of a spot that has a lot of meaning to them. This could be anywhere: the park, the library, a street that has beautiful homes, and even your own back yard. Everyone has a story to tell, so when people get their photos done I want my clients to be at a location they love and that they can be comfortable in!

For Example, Chasity and Jerry are getting married next month, when they booked for their engagements they made sure to let me know that they wanted their photos done at their favorite place to hike and camp. It was absolutely wonderful and I got to see this beautiful couple have fun and just love one another.

For families, maybe this is your favorite place to take your kids! The park, a trail, a pond, or maybe even downtown in front of your favorite shop! Even your own home could be a fantastic location – it all depends on you!

2.) Family, Friends, and Landmarks.

So, maybe you don’t have a spot that has a meaning to you. That’s okay. At this point, I like to ask people if they want indoor or outdoor. Urban or woodsy? General questions like that to narrow down location ideas.

Keep in mind of your friends or neighbors, do they have a pretty tree you like? Maybe they have a nice barn, or just a nice little area in their front yard. Ask their permission! You can find beautiful locations in places you wouldn’t even expect!

If that doesn’t work think of some landmarks like: Downtown, Canal Place, or Washington Street to name a few in my area. Start with well known landmarks like that and go from there. If you explore, you may find something incredible!

This was shot at a family friend’s home! We had a fantastic time shooting and exploring her farm land!

3.) Choose something that caught your eye.

Maybe you were driving home from work one day and you saw this beautiful path with trees lined on both sides, or you saw a really pretty field right by the park. Keep things like this in mind when you’re thinking of a location. Another thing to think about when choosing your location: Does it have shade, an interesting background, or multiple spots to shoot at?

Things like this you can keep in mind when you think of your location for your images!

This was shot in Will’s Creek, people pass by this place everyday. You wouldn’t think to shoot here but for this session, we thought it would be really nice. *shout out to my old logo*

Hopefully, keeping these things in mind you guys will be able to choose your location! Your location is super important! I hope you guys are having an awesome week!

Keep on Dreaming & Stay Inspired!
